A twisted fairy tale with a modern twist. But again beauty is only skin deep and love means more than money
Nice alternate world. When Nick went to Smoke in the first book and thought what if he and Bane met in Smoke, this is exactly the story! Great writing!
I sat down, intending to only read for a minute or two, and come back later to finish the story when I actually had the time. Once I started reading I got so caught up that I couldn't put it down until I had finished it! It immediately drew me in, captured my attention, and held it until the very end. After having read the original story on the authors website, and the first book of the re-made series as well (Cursed Broken), it was a real treat to read this short. It was like seeing old friends. I knew enough about the characters to understand where they were coming from and what was helping to motivate their actions - things that wouldn't have been so apparent with totally new characters. Don't get me wrong, the characters were painted beautifully in this story, but there's a deeper connection with characters that you're already familiar with, a back story and a history that adds to the richness of the experience. It's something that just can't be created in a first book. That's part of why I'm always drawn to series instead of one-offs I love getting to know the characters and then travel with them for a while, and this story, though short, definitely delivered.
However, it's by no mean necessary to have read the original version of Cursed, or Cursed Broken to be able to understand and enjoy this book. There was more than enough character and world building going on to make for a wonderful stand-alone story, even for someone who is completely new to this series. This was a fun, engaging, and imaginative take on an old favorite, and I hope the author will consider doing similar retellings of some of her other works in the future. Thanks so much!
